How to Create a Name for a Company

What's in a name? A good name can be a mini-advertisement for your company, and instantly gives customers an idea of what you do. A bad name leaves people wondering what you do, and doesn't portray your business as professional. Many people agonize over a name, while it really isn't all that hard. Catchy names are nice, but not always necessary.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Decide what your business will do. While this may sound like common sense, a lot of people select a business name based on its creativity alone. A good name will tell people what you do.
Step2
Search your business name idea online. If you are going to be solely online, you want your name to be original so you are not confused with someone else, especially if they have a bad reputation. You also want to search a site like GoDaddy to make sure your domain name is available.
Step3
If you are going to incorporate your business, you need to check with the appropriate local or state agencies to find out how to register a fictitious name. Many times there is a small fee involved and it has to go through the court system.
Step4
Once you have checked to make sure your business name is available, register it with the appropriate government agencies. You will usually need to do this before or at the same time you get your business license.
Step5
If you plan on having a website, buy your domain name right away.

Tips & Warnings

  • * Don't agonize over your name. It doesn't have to be the most creative name on the planet. Just make sure it accurately portrays who you are and what you do in as few words as possible.
  • * Don't plan on changing your name. It can be a lengthy and expensive process.
