When it comes to concept cars, no idea is too wild to give it a try. With fuel prices topping $4 a gallon, alternative powered cars are a real necessity. Here's how to make a balloon powered vehicle. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make a full scale model of this balloon powered car that will get you from point to point. If you fail, you will be disavowed. This article will self-destruct in sixty seconds. If all else fails, consult Red Green.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chassis
  • Wheel assembly for front and rear
  • Bellows
  • Weather balloon
  • Duct tape
  • A touch of madness
  • A couple of quarters
  1. Step 1

First, you will need a chassis and wheel assembly. You might find something at your local junk yard, or you can try using an old pedal boat. Attach a wheel assembly to your chosen chassis. The lighter the chassis and wheel assembly, the more likely your balloon powered car will work properly. Be sure to lubricate your wheel assembly.

  2. Step 2

Attach a bellows to the mouth of a weather balloon with duct tape, with the opening of the balloon facing the rear of the vehicle. This is so you can refill easily. Fill the weather balloon to capacity.

  3. Step 3

Release air from balloon to make your vehicle move. Refill with the bellows. When you are too tired to work the bellows, use the quarters to call for a ride.

  4. Step 4

People may laugh, and this article may appear to be a satire. Okay, it is , a little, but give me a break. Everyone knows that a balloon powered car is not something anyone is going to take seriously just yet. Nevertheless, people laughed at the Wright Brothers as they attempted to build the world's fisrt airplanes. They ridiculed Edison for his inventions. Anyone who wants to be on the bleeding edge of technology is going to get a few strange looks and better be prepared to be laughed at. But the person who succeeds in building a genuine balloon powered full size car will laugh all the way from the gas pump to the bank. Give it a try! The worst that can happen is that you'll use up some spare time, take a few thousand pounds of junk out of the local landfill and have some fun.

  5. Step 5

Tips & Warnings
  • Consult Red Green if you have any difficulty with the duct tape.
  • Be prepared for people to laugh at you while you work out the kinks in this plan. Edison tried and failed many times before he invented the light bulb. He said, "I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work."
