How to Fix Floor Grout Installed Too Deeply

Fixing floor grout that has been installed too deeply between tiles can be done, but is a time consuming task. Grout is composed of bonding agents which adhere to the sides of the tile. In order to fix floor grout, it is necessary to remove all of the grout that was previously installed. Removing floor grout takes patience and time but it can be done with the right tools. For the best results, follow these steps to fix floor grout that has been installed too deeply.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hand held grout saw
  • Paint scraper (must have a tear drop head)
  • Small grinding stone
  • Grout
  • Grout trowel
  • Rag

    Fixing Floor Grout

  1. Step 1

    Using a hand held grout saw, start to scrape the grout away starting at the center. A hand held grout saw is like a straight razor blade that is attached to a handle. The blade is diamond studded and is able to cut through grout.

  2. Step 2

    Using the hand held grout saw, now remove the grout along the edges of the tile.

  3. Step 3

    Use a paint scraper for any areas that cannot be reached with the grout saw. Slowing scrape away grout in delicate areas so as not to damage the tile.

  4. Step 4

    Run a small grinding stone along the edges of the tile to remove any remaining grout. Make sure all dust and grout debris is removed from in between the tiles.

  5. Step 5

    When all grout has been removed, mix the new grout and fill in between the tiles with a grout trowel. Let it set for a few minutes.Wipe away any residue from tiles with a wet rag.

Tips & Warnings
  • Work slowly so that the tile is not broken or damaged in any way.
  • When grout is completed cured, apply one to two coats of grout sealer.

on 5/21/2009 What is "floor grout installed too deeply?" I always thought grout was supposed to be pushed all the way down between the tiles.
