How to Paint an Outdoor Concrete Patio
It is common to have a concrete patio somewhere in the backyard of a home. There may also be one located in the front of a home. Concrete patios are easy to maintain but their appearance is rather dull. Unless the concrete was colored prior to pouring, a patio is usually gray in color and lifeless.It is easy to bring a concrete patio to life by painting it. Things You'll Need
- Outdoor paint (2 different colors, 1 for overall Background color and 1 for decorating)
- Paint roller with long handle
- Paint tray
- Sponge
- Clear sealer

Paining a Concrete Patio

Hose down the entire concrete patio to remove dirt. When it is completely dry, sweep away or vacuum any additional dirt that was left behind.

Use any exterior paint that is recommended for use on concrete. Have this paint tinted to the color of choice for the background.

Pour the paint being used for the background color into the paint tray. Using a roller with a long handle, dip the roller into the tray to cover with paint. Paint the entire patio making sure not to leave any empty spots. If necessary, apply a second coat. Let the patio completely dry.

Pour the paint being used for decorating into the paint tray. Soak a sponge in water and wring it out. It should be left damp. Gently dip the damp sponge into the paint. Tap the sponge on the clean portion of the paint tray to remove any excess paint. Lightly tap the sponge on to the painted concrete surface. Continue to do this over the entire surface. By moving the sponge around in different directions, it will create a random pattern. When the surface is dry, check for any empty spots and touch up any that need to be done. Again, allow this to dry.

Pour the clear sealer into the paint tray and with the paint roller, apply clear sealer to the entire painted surface of the concrete patio. This will protect the surface from general wear and weather. Allow this to dry before walking on the surface.

Tips & Warnings
Keep the sponge damp. Wash it out occasionally if it has absorbed too much paint.
Avoid dragging items on patio for at least 48 hours.
Sponge on a 3rd color for more dimension.
