Things You'll Need:

Hair Styles for Your Natural Hair

  1. Step 1

Embrace your natural hair texture. Don't try to change your curly hair to make it straight, or try to make your straight hair curly. Research hair styles that work best with your hair texture. There are literally thousands of hair styles to choose from. Look through beauty magazines and books to get an idea.

  2. Step 2

Consult with a professional stylist. Before you make any drastic changes to your mane, meet with a professional hair stylist for advice. A stylist will give you ideas, suggest products to use and help you develop a design for your natural hair.

  3. Step 3

Choose the right products for your natural hair. If you have dry hair, choose a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to soothe the dryness. If you have oily hair, you can skip the conditioner completely and just shampoo your hair. If you have frizzy or curly hair, use mousse or gel to tame the fly-aways and eliminate frizz. If you have straight or fine hair, use a volumizing shampoo to add some body to your hairstyle.

  4. Step 4

Develop a hair style and cut that works for you based on your natural hair texture. For example, if you have naturally straight and fine hair, you can cut it in layers to give it some volume, and add bangs. This is a no-fuss, low-maintenance style that is literally brush-and-go. Alternatively, you can cut your straight hair into a trendy bob, and you always have the option of putting your hair up in a pony tail or chignon.

  5. Step 5

To style your naturally curly hair, saturate it with a moisturizing conditioner when you're washing your hair. Run the conditioner through your hair with your fingertips until every lock is coated. Squeeze out excess moisture with a paper towel or old t-shirt. Let your hair air-dry. Once it's dry, turn your head upside down and gently loosen the curls with your fingertips. Don't comb or brush your hair as it will break the curl. Put your hair up with bobby pins or hair combs for a cute up-do.
