One of the most important things to remember when you are diabetic is that you have options. Reading this article will teach you how to compare diabetes treatment options.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider meglitinide treatments. The meglitinide treatment has been used for quite some time now and is the most common treatment besides insulin. Meglitinides work by stimulating the pancreas to produce insulin. The treatment must be issued at the start of meal or up to 30 minutes prior to a meal. Meglitinides should not be taken if you have skipped a meal. It is very important that you note the side effects of this treatment which include hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) and weight gain. There are currently no generic brands available for this treatment and is only available in its name brands such as Prandin. You should discuss this treatment in depth with your doctor before deciding upon treatments.

  2. Step 2

Be aware of biguanide treatments. Biguanide treatments are another treatment for diabetes but not widely used, but the effects of this treatment are well known. Biguanides are good for reducing insulin resistance in your muscle cells and they also decrease the production of glucose from the liver (a problem in Type 2 diabetics). Biguanides also reduce the absorption of glucose in the digestive system. Biguanides don't stimulate the production of the insulin hormone. Not many negative side effects are known about this treatment (possibly due to the lack of study done on the drug); however, one positive feature of this treatment is that it may cause weight loss, which is a good thing for overweight patients. It is very important that you discuss this treatment with your doctor including any new studies that might have been performed (because there are a few things not know about this treatment yet).

  3. Step 3

Consider old fashion insulin treatment. This treatment issues the insulin hormone directly into your body and is used by more than 65% of diabetics. Although insulin is the most profound of all diabetes treatments, it is important that you know insulin is not a definitive cure for diabetes. Insulin allows your body to absorb more glucose in the bloodstream in order for it to be transported to your cells for energy. There are a number of insulin treatments available and Exubera and Novolog are among many treatments that work in slightly different ways. It is recommended that you and your doctor discuss the treatment that is right for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your doctor is there to help you compare these treatments. Your doctor won't know your needs or concerns unless you express them.
