Here's what dry skin looks like.

When winter comes, dry skin comes with it. Sometimes it gets so severe the skin can crack and bleed. Diabetics are especially susceptible to dry skin, which can be uncomfortable as well as unattractive. Here are some tips for combating dry skin during those cold months.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Avocado
  • Moisturizing bath oil
  • Cornmeal
  • Flaxseed oil
  • Smoothie

    During the Day

  1. Step 1

Stay hydrated. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water every day to keep moisture inside your body.

  2. Step 2

Immediately after showering, apply body lotion all over. This will help lock in the moisture from your shower.

  3. Step 3

Apply a combination sunscreen and moisturizer to your face. This will protect your skin from sun damage and drying. When choosing a moisturizer, make sure it is not greasy or oily, but is absorbed readily into your skin.

  4. Step 4

If you live in a dry climate, invest in a small humidifier for your home and office.

  5. Step 5

Apply hand cream three or four times a day. Buy a small bottle that you can carry with you.

  6. Step 6

If venturing out in the cold, wear a hat and gloves to retain body heat and moisture.

  7. Step 7

When washing your hands and face, use only gentle cleansers and avoid washing your face more than three times per day.

  8. Extra Help

  9. Step 1

Dead skin tends to accumulate on your face, hands, knees and elbows, especially in the winter. Make a paste of cornmeal with water, and rub it on these zones vigorously to slough off these dead cells.

  10. Step 2

Mash an avocado and rub it on your face for a moisturizing treat. Soak in bathwater fortified with oil for 15 to 20 minutes while the avocado is on your face.

  11. Step 3

Wash the avocado off, and apply moisturizers.

  12. Step 4

Add some flaxseed oil to a smoothie to add precious oils to your skin, and as an after-bath treat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Small water spritzers that fit in your briefcase or purse can be sprayed on your face at intervals throughout the day.
  • Don't use harsh soaps in the bath. They will dry your skin more.
