Operating a business out of your home is an attractive proposition, but one that needs to be evaluated thoroughly.

From Quick Guide: Making Your Business the Best
Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Access
  • Business Loans
  • Business Cards
  • Computers
  • Business Plan Software
  • Business loans
  1. Step 1

Decide why you want to work at home. Is it for job flexibility, health reasons or a career change? Are you hoping to avoid a commute?

  2. Step 2

Consider your personality. Are you easily distracted, or are you self-disciplined? A self-disciplined individual is generally more successful at operating a home business.

  3. Step 3

Consider your career goals. Can they be achieved while working from home?

  4. Step 4

Try it out for a while. If it doesn't work out, you can always return to more traditional employment.

  5. Step 5

Consider the financial implications. Will working from home save you money, or cost you a regular paycheck? Be prepared to set up a new budget, and stick to it until your home-based business gets rolling - or you return to traditional employment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Working from home doesn't mean isolation. Join community organizations, chat online and receive e-mail newsletters to stay connected.
  • Try telecommuting first to see whether working from home is a suitable option for you.
  • Being unhappy in an office job doesn't mean that you will be happy working from home.
  • Avoid becoming a workaholic. When at home, it can be tempting to work all the time.

on 5/3/2009 You might want to think of a home-based business as a chapter in your career, not a forever thing. There are certain stretches of life when a home business can work very well - like when you have young children and don't want to spend all day in an office far away from them. Later, as they spend more of the day in school, you might move your home business to real office space -- or go back to a regular job.
