It seems that you have a thousand patch cables and no cross-over cables. Well they are easy to make if you know the wiring diagrams and have the wright tools.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cat 5 cable
  • Cat 5 8 conductor plugs
  • Cat 5 Crimper
  • scissors
  1. Step 1

Start by stripping the plastic cover from the wire about 1 to 1.5 inches back.

  2. Step 2

    Untwist all the pairs

  3. Step 3

arrange according to the wiring diagrams (568a or 568b)

    568b 1)orange/white 2)orange 3)green/white 4)blue 5)blue/white 6)green 7)brown/white 8)brown

    568a 1)green/white 2)green 3)orange/white 4)blue 5)blue/white 6)orange 7)brown/white 8)brown

  4. Step 4

for a patch cable wire both ends the same.

for a cross-over wire one side 568a and the other side 568b

  5. Step 5

Now that you have the wiring diagram down and all your wire arranged, straight and flat, use a pair of scissors and cut at a PERFECT 90deg accross (if you don't cut at 90deg your wires will not make contact to the pins on the plug)

*cut wires back 1/2 inch from cable jacket

  6. Step 6

insert into plug always holding the pins up

  7. Step 7

crimp making sure you squeeze the crimpers fully to make a good and secure connection

  8. Step 8

Repeat the process on the other end.

remember if your making a patch cable make both sides the same.

if you are making a cross over make one side 568b and the other side 568a

  • learn the wiring diagram
