Great food is just part of celebrating the Fourth of July when you're in another country.
Great food is just part of celebrating the Fourth of July when you're in another country.

Visiting another country on July 4 may feel strange. It’s just another work day in other countries, no hot dogs, no strawberry shortcake and no fireworks. Never mind. You still can celebrate our national holiday wherever you are.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Friends, relatives or colleagues
  • Food that reminds you of home
  • Funds for charitable or election campaign donation
  1. Step 1

Invite friends, relatives or colleagues to share the holiday with you. The celebration can be on July 4 or the closest weekend day. Send an email or a printed invitation and make it look festive with a red, white and blue color scheme.

  2. Step 2

Plan a menu of food you love from home. It can be hot dogs and hamburgers, barbeque, jambalaya or any other food you traditionally serve on July Fourth. It may be a little different when you use ingredients from another country, but that should just spice up the festivities.

  3. Step 3

Organize a softball or volleyball game. Bring Frisbees and other equipment. Include children with age-appropriate toys and games.

  4. Step 4

Read the Declaration of Independence out loud. Its signing was an extraordinary event in world history and is worthy of commemoration.

  5. Step 5

Make phone calls to your loved ones in the U.S. You’ll feel less cut off if you speak to the people you miss.

  6. Step 6

Send a contribution to a charity that works on a cause that touches you. Send a contribution to an election campaign that you support. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper at home to share your thoughts on July 4.

  7. Step 7

Send a letter or package to our troops abroad. They are putting their lives on the line so we can enjoy freedom. They deserve our deepest thanks.

  8. Step 8

Be a good ambassador for the United States of American. Be polite. Pay attention to the rules of etiquette in your host country. Try to speak a few words of the other language.

  9. Step 9

Have fun! This is a day to remember what all Americans share: the possibility of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try food with a red, white and blue theme. Strawberries and blueberries come in very handy and are in season now in many places.
  • Don’t hesitate to include traditional food from the other country. After all, that’s where you are now.
  • Be circumspect about where you put American flags when you are in another country.
