Farmers have always had problems keeping predators out of their livestock. This is the reason why fences and barns are so necessary on a farm. They not only protect the farm animals from the elements but also from predators as well. Knowing what to do to protect your farm animals is essential in order to keep everything running smoothly. You only actually require the basics, a shelter, a fence, a cage for flying birds as things of that nature will do the most good in protecting your livestock. Read on to learn how to protect your livestock from predators.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chicken wire fencing/ barbed wire fencing
  • Shelter for your livestock
  • Wire cutters
  • Pliers
  • Heavy work gloves
  1. Step 1

Install a chicken wire fence around the perimeter of your livestock area. This can be done by planting 8 foot tall metal poles about 8 feet apart and stretching the rolled up fence between them. Attach it with wire or hooks as you move along the fence line. If something more intimidating is needed, try installing a barbed wire fence around the outer perimeter.

  2. Step 2

Provide your animals with adequate shelter and a door that can be locked. This prevents not only wild animals from attacking your livestock but also keeps out the two legged predators as well.

  3. Step 3

Make certain that there are no gaps in your fencing where small predators can burrow in to attack your stock. Place rocks and logs up against the inside of the fencing to prevent tunneling.

  4. Step 4

Keep large predatory birds like hawks away by making sure there is plenty of tree cover over the livestock area. This doesn't prevent the birds from swooping down but it does tend to thwart their attacks somewhat.

  5. Step 5

Build a cover for a small fenced-in yard to accommodate and protect flying birds such as pheasants, quail and partridges. This also helps to protect them from predatory animals that can climb or predatory birds. You can do this by building a frame from lumber and slinging more chicken wire over the top and stapling it to the wood.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that the type of fencing that you choose is strong enough and tall enough to prevent your livestock from breaking it down, should something startle them and they stampede. This will also protect them from predators that might be capable of leaping a small fence.
  • Be very careful with chicken wire and barbed wire as both can cut your hand if you contact a loose wire or a barb. Wear gloves while erecting wire fencing.
