If you like the sound of vinyl, you'll need a turntable. Consisting of a platter that turns the record, a tonearm that holds the needle, and audio outputs for connection to an amplifier, a turntable is essential if you want to play records -- be they 45s or LPs. Bargains are out there for turntables, but you need to look around and keep a few things in mind when you shop.

How to Buy a Used Turntable

  1. Step 1

Start shopping! One of the best resources for used turntables is eBay. Check prices and get an idea what's available in your price range. Be sure the turntables you look at have the proper connections for your stereo system and are in good working order.

  2. Step 2

Consider whether to choose a belt drive or direct drive turntable. An old belt drive turntable isn't such a good idea. The belt may have deteriorated, and could be prone to failing. The broken belt may be difficult to replace. Direct drive turntables don't require a belt to transfer power from the motor to the platter, so you don't have to worry about the condition of the belt.

  3. Step 3

Examine the cartridge/needle type. Be sure that the type of cartridge (needle) that's on the turntable can be replaced. If you can't replace it, you'll be up the creek if it fails or when it wears out. www.needledoctor.com is a great resource for needles, used turntables and information.

  4. Step 4

Check the physical condition of the turntable if possible. Are the cables in good shape, does the motor operate quietly, and so on. If you're buying online, be sure that there is a return policy in effect.
