How to Do Dry Body Brushing


Dry body brushing provides many skin-related benefits and other health benefits as well. While not all of the health claims for dry brushing have been supported by medical research, holistic health coaches and skincare experts encourage people to try it, particularly for the alleged detoxification benefits.

Benefits of Dry Brushing

  • It exfoliates the skin and improves the texture by shedding dead skin.

  • It may improve keratosis pilaris. By exfoliating the skin, dry skin brushing can help reduce the prevalence of keratin plugs.

  • It encourages blood flow.

  • It stimulates the lymphatic system. According to ESPA expert, Ronel Corbin, naturophatic doctors recommend dry body brushing to patients experiencing bloating discomfort because it helps you shed excess water and toxins.

  • It may improve the appearance of cellulite.

What You Need

  • Brush with natural bristles

  • Moisturizer

You can find natural bristle brushes at health food stores, such as Whole Foods Market. The bristles should be firm, unless you have sensitive skin. In that case, opt for something softer.

How to Do It

Step 1: Instructions

  • Before you step into the shower -- your skin must be completely dry-- brush your skin in long strokes moving towards your heart, which stimulates blood circulation.

  • Use firm, long strokes to stimulate your lymph system, but use light pressure on sensitive skin.
  • Start with your feet, moving upwards toward your legs; brush them front and back. Brush multiple times as you progress toward your hips.
  • Proceed with brushing your stomach, using clock-wise circular motions.

  • Brush your arms starting with your hands, moving upward toward your shoulders, and then from your shoulders towards your chest and heart.

  • When brushing your chest or breasts, move outward from your nipples.

Step 2: After Brushing

Proceed with your shower. Make sure to moisturize your skin afterwards, preferably with an oil, such as coconut, grapeseed or argan because of their excellent skin-conditioning properties.


    • Be more gentle on the delicate areas of your body, such as your breasts.

    • Do not brush broken or irritated skin.

    • Do not brush your face or genitals.

    • A little redness may occur and is perfectly normal; however, you should not continue to brush if your skin looks irritated.
