All phonograph records are pretty much old. They need to be cleaned regularly in order to play well and not get scratched. Here's a simple homemade recipe for a record cleaning solution that will keep your vinyl clean and scratch free.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Tablespoon liquid soap
  • 1 Tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 cup warm water
  • Small smooth block of wood
  • Velvet - enough to wrap around the block
  • White glue
  1. Step 1

Pour the liquid soap and the baking soda into a small spray bottle. Add the cup of warm water and shake until it's well mixed.

  2. Step 2

Keep this solution away from small children. Mark the label clearly and put it up where kids can't get it. Although it's only soap, it is a combination that would make them quite sick.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the block in the velvet. Wrap it like a present with all the ends tucked neatly inside. Glue it in place.

  4. Step 4

Spray a small amount of the cleaner -- enough to moisten it -- on your record block. Put the record on the turntable and turn it on.

  5. Step 5

Hold the block very gently against the record. Wipe the block off with a paper towel to remove any traces of dust. Turn the record over and clean the other side in the same way.

  6. Step 6

Always put your records back in their paper sleeve and jacket. This is the best protection you can give them. If you clean them each time you use them, you won't have to worry as much about skipping or scratches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your records clean and in their sleeves and jackets for maximum protection.
  • Keep the record cleaning solution away from children.
