Instructions

    • 1

Fill a jar with water and add food coloring. Mix well. The more food coloring you use, the darker the petals will become. Begin with about 1/4 teaspoon to 1 cup of water and adjust it to your personal preference.

    • 2

Cut the ends of the stems at an angle, as this creates a greater vein surface area. Use a sharp knife to avoid crushing the capillary veins.

    • 3

Remove any leaves that would otherwise be underwater, so that the flowers will stay attractive longer.

    • 4

Place the stems in the colored water. Let them sit until the petals draw up the color --- usually several hours, or overnight.

Tips & Warnings

  • Maintain the color by replacing old water with freshly colored water every other day.

  • Give your dyed carnations a little extra "bling" with a little dusting of florists' glitter. Arrange them with greenery and beaded floral picks.

  • Food coloring may discolor plastic containers.
