Ferrets use the bathroom about every 15 to 20 minutes when they are awake. Training your ferret to use a litter box will keep his mess confined to one area so that it's easier for you to clean and less messy for him. Although litter training takes a lot of attention and patience, ferrets are very smart animals and will usually catch on within a few weeks.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ferret cage
  • Litter box
  1. Step 1

Keep the ferret's litter box in the corner of his cage. Once you choose a corner, leave it there to avoid confusing your ferret. Ferrets prefer to back into their litter box, so this is a good place for him to do so.

  2. Step 2

As your ferret is learning to use his litter box, keep the cage a bit smaller than what you'd normally do. Litter training is less messy with less room.

  3. Step 3

Until your ferret is litter trained, you should pick him up often and place him in his litter box until he goes. These frequent reminders will help him learn.

  4. Step 4

Place your ferret in his litter box immediately upon waking from a nap.

  5. Step 5

Keep a little poo in the litter box to remind your ferret that the litter box really is his toliet. This little stinky reminder may help him remember.

  6. Step 6

If you catch your ferret backing into the wrong corner of his cage, firmly tell him no and place him in the litter box. Repeat this step as needed.

  7. Step 7

Finally, anytime your ferret uses his litter box for the appropriate cause, praise him. Like children, ferrets like to be rewarded for a job well done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Encourage your ferret to use his litter box.
  • Praise him often.
  • Never hit your ferret if he has an accident. Aggression will lead to aggression.
  • If your ferret has an accident, never rub his nose in his waste. There really is no need for this as it does not teach a positive lesson.
