You are planning a party, but you don’t have any money for a DJ. So you tell yourself people have parties without a DJ all the time. Now let’s be honest. A party is just not the same if you don’t have someone giving shout outs on the microphone over hot music tracks and a satisfied dancing crowd.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • iPod
  • An iPod stereo speaker-system with a standard microphone jack feature.
  • Phono microphone
  • DJ play list of your favorite music
  • Extension cord
  • Table
  • Chair

How to DJ on an iPod

  1. Step 1

There are several ways to get music. Download every party song you want played at your party. Pull out your old CD collection, download your favorite artist from iTunes or any other music download program that you have on your computer. You can also have your friends email MP3’s to you.

  2. Step 2

Create a certified DJ play list. Name it “Party Songs” or “DJ Tracks.” Listen to 10 to 20 seconds of each song to get an idea of the beats. Arrange your songs according to the beats by placing them in an order that creates a smooth transition from one song to another. Keep the party going.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a stereo speaker-system with a microphone jack feature. Once you have purchased the audio system you can purchase the microphone. Take the complete kit home and begin testing your equipment before you DJ the party.

  4. Step 4

Connect the iPod to the stereo speaker-system and attach the microphone. Turn on the power to your iPod and stereo. Play a song on your iPod. Back away from the audio system to test the sound quality. Pick up the microphone and practice introducing the next song.

  5. Step 5

On the day of your party, set up a mini DJ area with a small table and chair. Set up your audio system at least a half hour prior to your guest’s arrival. Begin playing a few mid-tempo songs once your guests arrive.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test the audio system out before purchasing it.
  • Try to find an audio system with a ¼ standard microphone jack.
  • Make sure your stereo speaker-system has good-quality volume before you purchase it.
  • Set up your DJ booth near a working electrical outlet.
  • Test the microphone to make sure you do not get feedback from the speakers.
  • Ask your friends for popular songs that you may have missed. You can add them to your play list at the last minute.
  • Check Billboard's Top 20 for the newest music.
  • Check your favorite radio station’s online play list.
  • Take music requests once you are comfortable with your DJ skills.
  • Play a large variety of party music, even if you do not like the song. There will definitely be people there who like popular dance songs that you may not be interested in.
  • You may not be able to transfer all songs from your library or another play list. Familiarize yourself with the location of these songs so that you can switch from your DJ play list to another.
  • Keep all liquids away from electronics.
  • Check the weather report if you are going to have a party outside.
  • Do not allow other people to get on the microphone. They will start saying ridiculous things.
