How to Use the Frets on a Fiddle

Unlike some other stringed instruments, like the guitar, most fiddles don't have frets. However, newer fiddles are being made with small frets, and it is possible to temporarily add frets to older fiddles to help beginners with finger placement.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your fingers on the neck of the fiddle in the correct configuration for the first note of a scale. Try not to look at the neck as you place your fingers. Let your fingers feel the raised frets to guide your placement.

    • 2

Move your fingers into position for the next note on the scale. Go slowly at first to allow your fingers to get used to the feel of the frets. Remember to pick your fingers up to avoid fingering over the frets.

    • 3

Continue to move your fingers into position until you have played all the notes of the scale. Allow the frets to guide your fingers into place, particularly on the upper part of the neck.

    • 4

Play a simple song that incorporates the notes in the scale that you have practiced. Take your time, and notice the placement of your fingers relative to the frets.

    • 5

Remember that frets should not take the place of correct finger placement. Use them only as guides to assist you in finger placement.

Tips & Warnings

  • Frets can make it easier to learn correct finger position, but they should not take the place of regular practice.
