How to Work Out on the Road

Road trips can be exciting and a lot of fun even if they are intended for business instead of pleasure. You see new and interesting sights, accomplish things to move your career forward and meet valuable business and personal contacts. However, traveling is not good for fitness. Hotel gyms are limited to nonexistent and it is not advisable to run or jog in an unfamiliar area. Working out is one of the best ways to clear your mind and keep your focus, so it is very important to stay in shape while you are traveling. Interval train to get your cardio in. Jumping jacks, knee slappers and jogging in place are all ways to work out you cardiovascular system without leaving the hotel room. For example, you could run in place for a minute, do jumping jacks for two minutes, run in place for another minute, then finish off with two minutes of side-to-side hops. If you repeat these intervals five times, you have done half-an-hour of serious cardio without risking a jog in an unfamiliar area. This will also serve as a warm-up for your "weightlifting" routine.

Work out your upper body using an elastic resistance band. By standing on the band, you can simulate the motions and the muscle exertions that you would get out of doing dumbbell curls, upright rows and tricep extensions.

Use your own body weight to work out your legs. By rising up repeatedly on your toes and squatting with your hands on your head, you can use your own body weight to give your leg muscles a serious workout.

Finish up with your abs. Crunches can be done any time and anywhere. If you do not like lying directly on the hotel's floor, use a bath towel in place of a mat.

Cool down. Get out of the room and casually walk up and down the halls to stretch your muscles and allow your heart rate to return to normal.
