Many times the exterior of a home is not in need of painting or is covered with a material such as vinyl siding that does not require painting. At the same time, if the window frames are metal, they may look worn or faded from the weather. They, in fact, need to be touched up in order to keep up with routine maintenance of the exterior of a home. Here is an easy way of touching up exterior windows so that they look like new. This technique will last for several years and then can be applied again.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ladder
  • Permanent marker or paint pen
  • Rag
  1. Step 1

If the window frames are black, purchase several black permanent markers with thick tips at a local office supply store. If the window frames are white or another color, purchase several paint pens of the same color at a local office supply store or an arts and crafts store. These paint pens can also be purchased with thick tips.

  2. Step 2

Place the ladder in front of the window. Using a rag, clean the entire window frame.

  3. Step 3

Using the permanent black marker or colored paint pen, start painting the entire window frame. Hold the pen with the tip facing down so that the paint comes through the tip. Make sure not to leave any spots unpainted on the window frame. Shake the pen or marker occasionally to stir the paint inside. Allow to dry.

  4. Step 4

Using a clean rag, wipe away any mistakes, such as paint on the window or siding, while going along and before it dries.

  5. Step 5

Go back and touch up any spots that were overlooked.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using permanent marker or paint pens will result in a glossy finish similar to metal.
  • This technique can also be done on interior window frames.
