Things You'll Need:
- Appetite for Japanese food
- Transportation to New York City if you don't already live there
-
Step 1
Go to St. Mark's Place in the East Village. This area is full of Japanese dining delights. Everything from Japanese boxes to udon restaurants and sushi shops. This street also has a few "izakaya" shops which are Japanese casual appetizer restaurants. Be sure to stop by the two Japanese supermarkets here as well, Sunrise Mart and JAS Mart.
-
Step 2
Visit Tomoe Sushi on Houston Street. This tiny, extremely popular (there is often a line outside the door) sushi joint has the freshest fish in town. The sushi is extremely high quality and not expensive at all. And if sushi isn't exactly what you're craving, there are other items on the menu as well. Don't miss out on the ever-changing dessert menus either--the Japanese style cheesecake is extremely popular.
-
Step 3
Go to Nobu. Nobu is definitely known as a "celebrity" type of hangout, and definitely on the pricier side, but everyone who has been there seems to agree on one thing--the food is amazing and definitely worth the price. The menu is unique and flavorful--be sure to try the sashimi salad or the tuna tartare.
-
Step 4
Visit Hasaki. This East Village haunt is in an excellent locale--right by all the Japanese supermarkets, bakeries and specialty shops. The menu is excellent and the prices are extremely reasonable. The red miso (akamiso) soup included with main entrees is also highly tasty. Whether you like sushi, tempura,or teriyaki, this is a great Japanese dining experience for you.
-
Step 5
Go to Ippudo. Ippudo is a brand new Japanese ramen shop. Ippudo is a Japanese ramen chain that has just hit New York City, and the ramen is delicious and 100 percent authentic. Make sure to stop by this East Village restaurant if you want a genuine Japanese ramen dining experience. Be sure to check out the great array of appetizers (such as the shrimp in garlic sauce) as well.
