Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

To teach English in Vietnam you must have a bachelor's degree. The degree can be in any subject. You should get a Teaching English as a Foreign Language certificate (TEFL). Most English teaching jobs in Vietnam require that you have a TEFL certificate. If you have teaching experience they might accept that instead of a certificate. You can get a TEFL certificate by taking a TEFL class online.

  2. Step 2

Decide which area you want to teach in. You may prefer to teach in the city or the country. Keep in mind that traveling expenses in Vietnam can be pricey. You'll probably want to buy a bicycle once you move to the country to get around.

  3. Step 3

Start searching job boards. The most popular ESL job board is Dave's ESL Cafe.

  4. Step 4

When you find a job you're interested in check out the reputation of the school by searching the forums on the job board site.

  5. Step 5

Once you're sure the school is okay, follow the instructions in the ad for applying for the job. Once hired, the school will make arrangements for your working visa.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some people prefer to get a job once they are in the country. In Vietnam a travel visa is easily turned into a working visa without having to leave the country.
