How to Sew a Carnation and Tuberose Combination Lei

The Carnation and Tuberose Combination Lei is one that can be seen at various events in the Hawaiian Islands. It is given as a gift for graduations, birthday parties and other special occasions. Learn how to make a Carnation and Tuberose Combination Lei for fun or a gift in just a few easy steps.

Things You'll Need

  • 20 Medium size Carnation Flowers
  • 20 Tuberose Flowers
  • 6 ft of white Thread
  • 6 inch Lei Needle

Instructions

    • 1

      Thread the lei needle by placing one end of the thread through the eye of the needle. Pull the needle to the center of the thread until there is 3 ft of thread on each side. Tie the ends together approximately 3 inches from the end.

      Choose a carnation flower and pick it up at it's base with the thumb and index finger.

      With the other thumb and index finger, push the point of the lei needle through the bottom center of the flower. Pull the needle out through the top center of the flower and bring the flower gently to the end of the thread until it touches the knot.

      Repeat this process with 2 Tuberose flowers.

      Continue to alternate 1 Carnation and 2 Tuberose flowers until there are 2 Tuberose flowers and approximately 3 inches of thread left. Tie the ends of the thread together in a double knot with the the last Tuberose and first Carnation touching. Cut any excess thread.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tie a ribbon bow where the two ends of the lei meet to accentuate the lei.
