How to Write an Effective Syllabus for a College Course

Step1
Define the objective of the curriculum. Define the topical area(s) of debate, study and examination. State the purpose of the course, as defined by the academic relevance and merit of the course within the larger framework of the department.
Step2
Outline the scope of the curriculum. State the parameters of the curriculum by defining the framework of the material. Outline topic by topic, page by page, chapter by chapter. For example, "This class will examine the role of women in American politics from 1980-1990." Or, "This class with cover chapters 1 through 13, with special attention given to pages 1-17, 22-31, and 49-201."
Step3
Bold test dates, deadlines and requirements. Bold key dates, chapters or topics for immediate review. Always bold mid-term and final exam dates.
Step4
Provide office hours and contact information. State the specific time and days of the week set aside for conferencing, mentoring, and questions.
Step5
Explain the grading system. Demonstate how each grade is earned and state the percentage value for each grade.
Step6
State plagiarism policy. State the consequence for student's found be in violation of plagiarism. Note a no-tolerance policy to emphasis the gravity of the issue.
