How to Make a Witch Broom

A witch broom has many uses, but it may not fly you to the moon.

A witch broom may not have you flying off into the sunset, but it can serve other purposes around the home. Officially known as a besom, a watch broom can be used as décor or in a number of rituals. The besom can also be swept around an area to fully cleanse and purify any space. You can make your own witch broom with a few simple steps.

Things You'll Need

• Stick or medium branch for handle
• Thin branches for bristles
• Heavy-duty twine, wire or leather cord
• Bucket of water

Instructions

1. Round up the supplies. One stick or medium branch, at least 4 feet long, will serve as the handle. A handful of thinner branches, at least 1 foot long, will become bristles. You can find branches in the woods, in the park or snip them off your tree. You’ll also need something to wrap it all together with, such as wire, leather cord, heavy-duty twine or another heavy cord.

2. Soak your branches in a bucket of water overnight so they are pliable enough to bend for construction of the broom. Once they are soaked and pliable, remove them from the bucket and shake off any excess water.

3. Tie the bristles to the handle. Lay your handle on the ground with the bristles parallel to it. Make sure the bristles are upside-down for their initial tying. Tie them into place by wrapping your cord near the bottom of the handle around the ends of the bristles.

4. Flip the bristles from their upside-down position to right-side up, cascading them gently around the cord and covering it. The bristles should now be at the bottom of the broom.

5. Tie another length of cord near the bottom of the handle, securing the bristles into place from the outside. After letting your witch broom dry for a day or two, you'll be all set to use it for whatever your heart desires.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are going to use the broom in rituals or for purification, use your favorite ceremony to get your broom ready to perform such services.

• Store or hang the broom in a sacred place, not next to the mop bucket in the garage.

• Don’t try to sweep up broken glass, gravel or cat litter with this broom. In fact, don’t try to sweep up anything with this broom. This broom is special and not meant for everyday sweeping.
