There are many different types of rasps that can be used for shaping and smoothing sculpting. This article will introduce several rasps, and explain how to use the round rasp for sculpture curves.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Round rasp
  • Rasp brush
  • Sculpting material
  • Goggles
  • Vice
  • Face mask
  1. Step 1

Know that there are a variety of rasps available for sculpting. The primary ones are a round rasp, flat rasp and curved rasp. The round rasp is ideal for curves.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the rasp is clean. If there is any debris in the teeth, use a rasp brush to clean it. Push the brush across the teeth of the rasp. Do not pull back on the brush.

  3. Step 3

Hold the rasp by the tail, or handle. Place the rasp against the surface where you would like to form a curve.

  4. Step 4

Push in one direction, but do not pull back. Always pushing the rasp in one direction will keep the teeth sharper for longer.

  5. Step 5

Use round rasp to make deeper, more rounded curves. A curved rasp is better for more shallow curves. Test both to see which one works better for the shape desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a vice to secure the material. This will keep the material from slipping.
  • When using sculpting tools, wear goggles and a face mask. The dust from the material is harmful to the eyes and lungs.
