Having a toothache is one of those pains that you do not wish upon anyone.Getting rid of the toothache when it arrives is another obstacle that is hard to get over without going to the dentist. Here are a few ways that will help ease the pain of a severe toothache.

From Quick Guide: Curing Toothaches
Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 100+ proof whiskey
  • Cotton Balls
  • Fresh Garlic
  • Clove Oil
  • Heating pad
  • Gauze pads
  • Ibuprofen
  1. Step 1

Take four Ibuprofen pills before you do any of the steps. Ibuprofen must be 200mg, the reason being is that 800mg of Ibuprofen is considered prescription strength and usually works to help the pain as well as the swelling.

  2. Step 2

Take a cotton ball and soak it with 100 proof whiskey. Place the whiskey soaked cotton ball directly on the tooth that is hurting. Leave it there until all the whiskey has completely come out of the cotton ball.

  3. Step 3

Crush up a clove of fresh garlic and place inside a piece of gauze cut to fit the crushed clove. Press down hard on the gauze until you feel the garlic oils coming through. Place the gauze directly on the tooth that is hurting for just five minutes. Any longer and the garlic will burn the skin on inside of your mouth. Take it out and discard it, repeat an hour later.

  4. Step 4

Soak a cotton ball with clove oil and place inside of mouth where tooth is hurting. Be sure to squeeze the excess clove oil off the cotton ball before placing it inside of your mouth. You do not want to get this on your tongue it is very potent and will make you gag.

  5. Step 5

Turn your heating pad on the highest it can go and place on the side of your mouth that is hurting. Once the heating pad has reached it's hottest capacity, turn down to medium and lay your head down on it.

  6. Step 6

Call a dentist as soon as you can. These methods do work for a short time and a dentist is needed almost every time when it comes to a severe toothache.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never poke or put anything inside your tooth while it is hurting.
  • Keep away from all sweets when your tooth is hurting.
  • Rinse your mouth out with mouthwash as often as possible. This kills the bacteria in your mouth.
  • If you have a fever or the pain is just unbearable, see an emergency dentist or dentist immediately.

on 11/4/2008 Valerie is right. I used a heating pad for a VERY painful tooth, and it actually spread the infection so bad that it would not go away, even with antibiotics.... I had to use 3 different antibiotics before the infection FINALLY went away... So even if heat makes it feel better for a short time, it makes it worse in the long run. Use ice!

on 10/9/2008 Actually DO NOT USE HEAT for a toothache!!!! It can spread the infection. Instead, use an ice pack.
