How to Treat Your Dad to a Father's Day in the Big City

Whether you are a resident or a transient, many people will enjoy the sights and sounds of New York City this summer. With so much to do and so much to see, it can be easy to distract yourself from the primary objective which is celebrating dear old dad and his contributions to your life. While there is a litany of things that people can do and they are invariably as different as our respective hairstyles, there are some things that people like to do, generally; dads included.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • dad
  • time
  • money
  • knowledge
  1. Step 1

    1) Go See Sports: While you may have made it too late to get tickets to the Father’s Day festivities at Shea Stadium this year, going out to see a baseball game is usually something that a lot of dads appreciate. The Mets are playing Texas if you think you can score some last minute seats to their afternoon game; if not, there are ways to incorporate your dads favorite sports teams into some of the other things you can do.

  2. Step 2

    2) Go Out to Eat: There are a whole bunch of great restaurants all over Manhattan and the five boroughs so finding something your dad would like is as easy as picking up a Zagats guide. Going along with the sports suggestion, if there is a team your dad likes who happens to be playing on Sunday, you can invariably go to a sports bar and get the bartender to turn one of the TV’s to the game your dad is interested in seeing. This solves the problem of eating and seeing sports!

  3. Step 3

    3) Cultural Alert: There are a whole lot of things to do besides bars and Broadway in New York City. If your dad is more inclined towards cultural events then you can certainly make a point to go somewhere he’s never been before. Try Museum Mile but not the usual suspects; visit something like El Museo Del Barrio and learn about the Spanish Cultural contributions to the New York Cityscape.

  4. Step 4

    4) Romantic Weekend: If you are not interested in going with your dad and you want to set up him and his honey on some romance magic, you can do that as well. Make sure to go over it with his partner and see what they have to say about it. You can get a spa weekend for two or send them off on a Hudson River Dinner Cruise or set up an open ended weekend in the Big Apple for him. With some thought about who your dad is and what he likes, it may be the nicest Father’s Day gift he’s ever gotten.

Tips & Warnings
  • remember who the gift is for
  • be mindful of his likes and dislikes
  • involve his partner if he's bringing someone
  • don't worry! these thoughts are good anytime of year
