Here are fun, homemade, unique, barrettes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup of all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup of salt
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • Elmer's Clear Gel Glue
  • Glitter
  • Acrylic Metallic Paint
  • All-Purpose Sealer
  • Computer Paper
  1. Step 1

    Preheat oven to 220 degrees.

  2. Step 2

Combine flour, salt, and water until it forms into a soft pliable dough. It should look and feel very similar to modeling clay.

  3. Step 3

Place parchment paper on the bottom and top of the clay so that it won't stick to your rolling pin and roll out the clay into a large sheet. It should be about an 1/8 of an inch thick.

  4. Step 4

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place rolled clay on top of it. *Tip* Easy enough to take the parchment paper you were already using and line the bottom of the pan with it.

  5. Step 5

Place the flat piece of clay into the oven for 1 hour. To cook evenly flip the clay over every 15 minutes (it keeps the dough from drying out too much on the top).

  6. Step 6

Allow clay to cool for one hour. When clay is cooled cut out your barrette design with a utility knife. I measured and wrote right on the clay before I cut it.

  7. Step 7

After the clay has been cut; sand the pieces down with sandpaper until it is nice and smooth.

  8. Step 8

Paint the clay with an acrylic paint and then seal it with an all-purpose sealer.

  9. Step 9

Design a label using Paint, Photo-Studio, Gimp, or whatever program you use for graphics. And then print it out on your laser printer using the "Best" printing feature.

  10. Step 10

Brush Elmer's Clear on the side of the clay that you want to adhere the picture to. Place printed picture on top of glue and allow to dry.

  11. Step 11

Meanwhile as the glue dries you can make your own sparkle decoupage. Place about a 1 tsp of Elmer's Gel Clear Glue in a bowl, add about a 1/4 of tsp of water, and sprinkle a little glitter into the mixture.

  12. Step 12

Brush the decoupage on top of the printed picture completely adhering the entire picture to the clay, including sides. The clay will need 2 to 3 coats of decoupage.

  13. Step 13

Once everything is dry use a glue gun to adhere the finished clay piece to the metal barrette.
