There is nothing worse than buying a used car or renting a car and finding out the car smells of cigarettes. Typically the smell people say you can never remove. It gets into everything. Spending money on fragrances will not make a difference because first the smell of vanilla and cigarette just doesn't work and second once the fragrance is gone the cigarette smell is still there just as strong as before. But no more! You are about to find out how easy it is to get this smell out. You will need a bottle of disinfectant spray. You can get it at any grocery store but be sure it is the sort that kills germs, mold, bacteria etc. Nothing with fragrance is needed. The smell is not in the air but in the filter and airway of your car's A/C. Turn on the air to the MAX. It must be in the cycle mode as it needs to circulate the spray through the car's entire airway.
The cycle mode of the A/C sucks the air in under the dash board on the passenger's side. Spray "A LOT" of the disinfectant (you may want to use the whole bottle depending on the size of the bottle you purchased, because the idea is to soak the entire car A/C's airway. Let that cycle run for a minute so it can really get into everything. The car will smell of disinfectant spray for a day or two since you used so much of it but believe me, once it goes away the smell of cigarettes is also gone for good. Depending on how bad the smell is you may want to repeat the process a week later but remember, killing the germs and disinfecting the car's airways is the whole idea. This worked for me and everyone that has tried. I hope it helps you. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • I found that Lysol was the best brand for this.
  • You better do this in a ventilated area and probably when you don't have to drive the car within at least the next 24 hours.
