Step 1
Be Sensible.
Speeding, along with heavy braking can waste gas. So stick to the speed limit, and try to keep a consistent speed when possible. -
Step 2
Lose the weight.
Keep heavy useless items out of the car. The heavier the more gas is used. -
Step 3
Idling.
Turn your car off when you are going to be on idle for long periods of time, like in a drive-thru. -
Step 4
Car maintenance:
Get regular car maintenance to ensure better gas mileage, and keep tires inflated at the correct pressure.

on 3/9/2009 The comment about turning the car on and off is NOT true if you have to idle for more than several minutes. Excessive idling can damage your exhaust system and it will shorten your spark plug life significantly. In fact, some states are banning idling longer than 3-5 minutes. Ask your friendly local police officer if there is an idling law in your city. My state has one.

on 8/20/2008 you dont want to turn your car off when your going to idle for long peroids of time like at drive thru or stop lights because when you start your car up it rev's up and reveing up use's alot more gas because you go to higher rpms than sittinh at low rpms when idleing
