How to Prep Shelves for a CD Rack
Your home is your castle. It’s a place that you want to be unique. You want to keep every item in your home unique and you want everything individualized including your CD Rack. Of course there are CD racks you can buy at just about every store, but they seem so commercial and flimsy. Any shelf wooden cupboard or even an old wooden ladder can be used as a CD rack and this will give your home a certain uniqueness. It may even give your guests something to talk about. If you have wall mounted shelves, a whole shelving unit, or even a wooden ladder that has been pinned to the wall you can create some great CD racks. You will need to either cut your own shelving or buy precut laminate, or painted shelving, and two or three shelving brackets, depending on how long you want your shelved. Shelving brackets come in different lengths and the length you buy will depend on how many CD shelves you want. If your CD shelves are longer than 24” to 30” then you will need three brackets, one on each side and one in the middle for shelf support. You will also need drywall anchors to hold the brackets and shelving to the wall. Get heavy duty anchors that will take about a 90 lb weight. Does this Spark an idea?

How to prep Shelves for a CD Rack

Buy precut shelves. You can either buy precut and laminate shelving, or make your own shelves.

Make your own shelves. To make your own CD shelves you need to clean and sand 1x4 boards. You can have them cut to whatever length you need.

Paint or stain them the color you want (some already come stained, or laminated).

Measure the distance you need the shelving brackets to be from each other (this will depend on the length of your boards). Mark the distance with a pencil. Use a level to make sure that the height of each bracket will be correct.

Take your pencil and mark the places where you are going to install the anchors.

There are anchors that can be drilled directly into the wall, and these are the easiest to use. Attach the anchor to the drill and drill through the wall slowly.

When the anchors have been drilled into place. Hold your shelf bracket in place and screw it into place with the screw being inserted into the anchor through the shelf bracket. Follow the same procedure for installing each shelf bracket.

Slip the shelves you made into the bracket on the wall.

Purchase plastic CD rack inserts that you can screw into the shelves, or on the rungs. These inserts are made in any size and can create great CD racks of any size. You can purchase the inserts from many different sites that sell tools and equipment to wood workers. Screw the inserts into the underside of the top shelf.

Choose 1” x 4” boards and drill holes halfway through the underside of the top board every two inches.

Do the same on the upper side of the lower shelf.

Take a dowel and cut it into 8” pieces and cover the ends with wood glue and insert into drilled holes.

Screw shelves into wall using the above shelf brackets and anchors and you have an interesting CD rack.

Using shelves as a CD rack can clear up your floor space and keep your CD’s organized in a neat and creative way. This will make the space seem better organized and larger than normal.

Tips & Warnings
The fun part is making almost any wooden object into a CD rack and the inserts allow you to do this. Don’t be afraid to get creative. Making a CD rack is easy and inexpensive and almost anything, a crate, a shelf, a ladder, a wooden box, can be made into a CD rack, so long as it has the right dimensions. The point is that you be as creative as you can be, and make your CDs seem unusual and not just something you bought at your local Walmart.
