Plan ahead. Before traveling to Britain, be sure to know approximately how long you intend to stay. This will help you determine your estimated daily cost. If you plan on staying for two weeks, for example, your estimated overall cost at $40 a day would be around $500 to $600 dollars. Also be sure to know your exchange rates. They vary from day-to-day, but think one US dollar to one British pound.

Learn about travel “packages.” You can stretch your travel or food dollar by learning what travel packages are available to you. Communal residences, or “hostels” (not like the movie!) provide very good lodging at little or not cost. Food, in some circumstances is even free. There are many “bed and breakfast” services, hotels and motels to choose from. Also, contact an airline for area information, as well. Be nice to them as they may give you access to unpublicized discounts.

Contact a British university. There are more than 50 colleges in Britain that may have rooms or other services available to travelers. Email or call any of the colleges services and support departments for information. The University of Kent or even Oxford, for example. If you have Skype, all your phone call will be for free. This software provides users with the ability to make free international calls over the Internet.

Learn about Eurail and Eurostar. This is a program where people travel across Europe by train for next to nothing. You will not be able to Eurail in Britain, but having a Eurail pass will dramatically reduce your overall costs. Once you reach the outskirts of Britain, there are boat crossings and Eurostar trains that will take you where ever you need to go.
