Iguanas are unique pets that need special care. This part can sometimes be challenging. If you don't select the proper living quarters for your pet iguana, you are not providing the optimum care for your new friend. Here is how you can find the perfect cage for your pet!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy a large sized cage. Your new iguana may look cute and small now, but iguanas grow very quickly and need lots of space. A ten gallon aquarium might house an iguana for the first month or so, but it is not a long term solution. Your iguana could grow up to 6 feet long with the first four years. Iguanas like to lie flat, not at an angle, so you need something long enough for him to lie flat in. Also, iguanas like to climb so you will need something high enough for a 6 foot iguana to have room to climb in. Your iguana cage needs to be a bare minimum of 6 feet tall and 6 feet wide.

  2. Step 2

Choose an iguana cage made out of the proper materials. A cage made out of wire is not going to keep the temperature at an even level for your iguana. You don't want it to be drafty in the cage, and you don't want your iguana to get his body parts stuck in the wires. An iguana cage should ideally be made out of glass at least on one side. The iguana needs to see out, and the cage needs to be easily cleaned.

  3. Step 3

Buy an iguana cage with plenty of options for climbing platforms. Your iguana does not want to sit in the bottom of a box. Iguanas are natural climbers and need plenty of opportunities to climb and perch.

  4. Step 4

Assess options for heating. Every iguana cage needs a heat source. Be sure that your iguana cage has either a built in heat source, or an opening for heat lights or electric cords for inside heat rocks.

  5. Step 5

Make sure your choice of cage has plenty of ventilation. Iguanas need fresh air even though they need their temperature precisely controlled. Make sure your iguana cage is vented to give your pet fresh air and to prevent mold.

  6. Step 6

Buy an iguana cage with lighting options. Your iguana likes it light during the day and dark at night just like you! Make sure you have lights for dark days or times when no one is home. Be sure to give your iguana plenty of darkness at night.

Tips & Warnings
  • Study all that you can about your new friend. Information is power in caring for your friend!
  • Don't forget that your iguana is a unique creature with special needs, or you could unintentionally hurt him through lack of proper care.
