How to Change the Name of a Wireless Network
When you originally set up your wireless network, you likely gave it a name. If you didn't, it probably defaulted to the brand name of your wireless router. You don't have to be stuck with the name you originally gave it or the default name. You can change the name of a wireless network quite easily.

1
Look in your router's instruction manual to find its internal IP address. The IP address is a series of numbers, broken up by periods. For example, a common router IP address is 192.168.0.1.
-
2
Type the router's IP address into the address bar of your Internet browser and click "Enter." This will open a web page with your router's control panel.
-
-
3
Enter your username and password. If you did not set these, you will need to check with your router manufacturer's website to find the defaults. Often the default username is "admin" and the default password is blank.
-
4
Access the "Wireless" link on the page.
-
5
Enter your new wireless network name in the field labeled "Wireless Network Name." This field is also commonly labeled as "SSID." Save your changes.

Tips & Warnings
If you can't find your router's instruction manual, you can find the router's internal ID by using your computer. Go to "Start," click "Run" and enter "cmd." This will open a blank window. Type "ipconfig" and click enter. Under the "Gateway" column, you will see your router's IP address.
Secure your wireless network by adding WPA or WEP password protection. This will protect your network from intruders.

You'll need your "key" to reconnect once you've changed the name, so DON'T change the name if you don't know the key!
