Things You'll Need:
- Manual
- Socket wrench
- Zip-ties
-
Step 1
Pop your hood and slide up the part that holds your hood propped up. If you’re missing that part, use a piece of wood wedged into the grill and slide the other end up to meet the hood. The last thing you want is to have the hood drop on your head while looking for the mounting bolts.
-
Step 2
Find the mounting bolts that hold your fuel filter in place. This is a good time to consult your owner’s manual, which comes with a detailed drawing of the engine. If you don’t have your original manual, try borrowing one from the local library or purchasing one off the internet.
-
Step 3
Place your socket wrench on top of the fuel mounting bolt and turn the wrench to the right. You’ll want to make sure you’re using the proper size wrench otherwise it could become stuck or simply slide off the bolt. Try using a few different sockets until you find the right fit.
-
Step 4
Look around the fuel filter to find the other mounting bolts and remove each one, taking them off one at a time. Most vehicles have two mounting bolts, while some models have four. Double check the fuel filter to make sure you remove all the bolts.
-
Step 5
Slide a zip-tie into the space where you mounting bolts once were and pull them tight to keep your fuel filter from sliding around until you’re ready to remove it. Without the zip-ties the fuel filter could drop to the ground or fall into the engine. Once you’re ready to repair or remove the fuel filter, just cut off the zip-ties.
