Things You'll Need:
- Roller skates
- Wrist guards
- Partner (optional, but helpful)
-
Step 1
Start with a partner or head to your local rinks practice area. If outside, find a safe flat area, and fit your skates with outdoor wheels.
-
Step 2
Breathe deeply, try to relax your limbs so you are not rigid.
-
Step 3
Keep your knees bent and lean forward a little.
-
Step 4
If you can, push yourself back from a wall gently to get started.
-
Step 5
Don't try move both feet at once, just make one foot go in curved motion, sort of like an "S" over and over again - only not such sharp curves - more like parentheses this way ( then this way ) back and forth, over and over again. This is the best way to start.
-
Step 6
Once you feel comfortable with this, ask a partner to hold your hands while you go backwards and they go forward. Preferably, they know how to skate at least a little bit! Remember not to watch your feet!
-
Step 7
Listen to music, don't forget to breathe. Practice makes perfect!
-
Step 8
Once you feel like you can keep yourself going with one foot, it is time to start using the other foot too! Keep the motion the same as before but alternate the feet. So first the right foot curves in like this ( and then, your left foot curves in like this ) back and forth, over and over again. Don't forget, once you get good at it, lift your heals a bit, keeping toes connected to the pavement. To go around corners, use your outside foot and step over your inside foot - again, use a partner the first few times.
-
Step 9
That's it! Practice makes perfect, it won't happen overnight but just relax, wear wrist guards, breath and don't over think it. Soon enough you will be gliding around like you were born on skates!
