The Clone Tool is one of the most useful tools in Paint Shop Pro. It is essential for removing flaws and undesirable objects from your photographs and digital art. The tool allows you to use a texture or image rather than a solid color to fill in areas of your image, and can be used with a wide variety of brush settings.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
A picture of my son with undesirable elements in the background. Open two very similar images which were taken around the same time, or two separate copies of the same image. To open the same image twice in Paint Shop Pro, you will have to save it again with a different file name. Select the Clone Tool from the toolbar. Find the undesirable elements that you wish to edit out of the picture. Then find an area in the second image which has a very similar color and texture to the area surrounding the undesirable object. For example, if the item you wish to edit out is a person standing in front of trees in the background, then look around the image of the person for textures to use.
Step2
Select the brush shape, size, hardness, step, density, thickness and rotation in the Tool Options Palette above the image. Select the opacity, blend mode and stroke, if desired. If you find a particularly good combination of settings, select the presets drop-down box to save them.
Step3
The tree texture in the background has been used to remove the upper half of the woman's body. Right click on the image or area of texture you wish to use in the second image. Then, go back to the first image and left click on the undesirable object. You may need to click Edit > Undo more than once if the clone doesn't come out just as you like it. Start over again as many times as you need to in order to get the best possible results.
Step4
Two pumpkins and some hay have been "cloned in" to replace the woman's upper legs. Drag the mouse over the undesirable image, holding down the left mouse button. Drag very slowly and very carefully, taking precautions not to clone too large an area. Look out for sudden breaks in color and texture which may crop up in your image. Pick up the mouse and right click on your second image again if you find that the area you're cloning isn't working for your image. You can clone out an image by cloning a block of texture into your image. You can clone in an image by selecting the desired image in the second picture and tracing the image, taking care not to exceed its boundaries. When cloning in an image, you should pay more attention to the black X which appears on the source image, rather than the clone tool which appears on the destination image.
Step5
The finished image with the background characters removed. Make any final adjustments to the image, such as heightening the brightness and contrast or color saturation. Save your image with a new file name when you are finished with it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reduce the size of the image boxes and zoom in to the images to get the best precision with the Clone Tool.
  • Watch out for patterns which may develop when too small an area is cloned into an image.
  • The clone tool is very useful for removing spots and stains from clothing and objects.
