Racing radio controlled cars and trucks is always a fun recreational activity. This fun can turn into one heck of a great time if you can turn your awesome truck into a rock crawling beast. This article will show you how to turn your truck, right out of the box, into a rock crawler with little money.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • TXT-1 R/C truck
  • JB weld
  • Set of screwdrivers
  • X-Acto knife
  • Dremel
  • Small piece of flexible aluminum
  • Several pieces of solid aluminum rod
  • Drill
  • Rod ends
  • 9-tooth gear

Turning Your Truck Into a Rock Crawler

  1. Step 1

Lock the differentials by opening up the axles and removing the differential carrier then, using JB Weld, glue the spider gears together.

  2. Step 2

Using your knife, trim the width of your tires to make them narrower.

  3. Step 3

Cut a new tread pattern in your tire by making the lugs narrower. Use your dremel to smooth out the rough edges made by your cutting.

  4. Step 4

Remove the servo skid plates and convert to a more conventional steering link by using a piece of aluminum and the existing holes.

  5. Step 5

Shave the axle bottoms with your dremel tool's sanding drum by removing anything that is hanging down.

  6. Step 6

Move your suspension links to the top of the axles and double up on the link mounts and then mount the links to one pivot point.

  7. Step 7

Make your wheelbase longer by 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch by measuring your rod and cutting it. Drill each end of the rod and slide through threaded rod and screw on rod ends.

  8. Step 8

Cut your chassis to allow for better clearance by removing unneeded pieces of aluminum. Shave off the lower mounting plastic with the dremel tool.

  9. Step 9

Move the battery tray from the back of the truck to the front.

  10. Step 10

Open your motor and remove the gear and replace with a nine-tooth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never rush. Rushing anything can cost you money.
  • When cutting aluminum rod remember to measure twice and cut once.
  • Do not get any JB Weld inside of the axle tubes of the differential carrier.
