How to Calculate Math Variable Expressions
Variable math expressions are just a way to determine a math problem. The variable, usually a letter, along with a number are used to form a statement. The terminology used to describe calculating variable math expressions make the process sound a whole lot more difficult than it really is. Here some steps that can help navigate the proverbial maze:

Calculate Math Variable Expressions
-
1
Determine your variables. This means you have to ask yourself if the problem involves one or more variables. Also determine how many equations you may actually have. There may be several in just one calculation.
-
2
Rearrange expressions. You can do this by creating new forms previous expressions.
-
-
3
Substitute if you can. If you find yourself with an expression form that puts a variable in terms of one or more expressions, substitute this into another equation to eliminate the extra variable. Keep substituting for as long as you can. The goal is to reduce the expression as much as possible.
-
4
Isolate and solve. Use general mathematical operations (add, subtract, multiply and divide) to isolate the variable on one side. Remember to do this on the alternate side, if applicable. When you are done, you should have a variable that will be “equal” to a numerical value. “X=5,” for example.

Check your answer. One you have established a variable equal to a numerical value, take that value and plug it into your problem. Start from the beginning and work your way through.

Tips & Warnings
Always try to play with various forms of math expressions. To see what you get, add numerical values, but be sure they are equal on either side.
Never combine your variable and numerical quantities.
Be sure to distribute signs correctly and evenly.
