Pets may not like to share their food, their home or their human companions. So, if there's a new addition to your family, your pet may be jealous. Here's how to deal with it.

How to Deal with a Jealous Pet

1. Determine the reason for the jealousy. Is it a new baby, a new pet or a new significant other? Determining the reason for your pet's jealousy will help you know how to handle it. In any case, give your pet plenty of time to adjust to the change.

2. Try to keep your routine as regular as possible. Of course that might not be easy to do if the object of your pet's jealousy is a new baby. Try to keep pet activities such as feeding or walks on the usual schedule. Pets tend to get stressed when there's a break in routine.

3. Give your pet lots of attention and affection. Whether your pet is jealous of a human or another pet, shower him with love and affection to let him know he's not being replaced.

4. Play with your pet. Playing with your pet can help ease the tension and give you some fun time together with your jealous friend.

5. Let your pet bond with the new addition naturally and gradually. Don't try to get your pet to make nice with the new family member right away. He'll come around in his own good time. Your pet will warm up and make friends when he's ready.
