Instructions

  1. Create Your Color Etched vase

    • 1

Clean that old plain glass vase, jar, or plate that you want to etch on. Dry it off so that you have a clean surface to work with. Use window cleaner to remove any grease or dirt.

    • 2

Create a pattern on tracing paper. One idea is to use an old doily and draw the designs from the openings of the doily to make your design. Or, if you are really creative, make your own design.

    • 3

Place the transfer paper face down over the paper backing of the adhesive shelving material.

    • 4

Tape the pattern on top and trace the shaded areas onto the backing

    • 5

Cut the stencil through all layers with the craft knife, leave a border of vinyl around the outer edges.

    • 6

Wipe down the outside of the glass once more before you peel off the paper backing from the cut stencil and smooth the stencil onto the glass.

    • 7

Apply the tape over the outer edges of the stencil to secure it into place

    • 8

Wear your long sleeved shirt , gloves and goggles. Protect your work surface with plastic or paper.

    • 9

Follow the manufacturer's directions precisely to apply the etching cream in the stencil spaces with the small brush.

Finishing off your Colored Etched Vase

    • 10

Allow the Cream to dry for five to ten minutes

    • 11

Wash off all traces of the cream with clear tap water and remove the stencil and throw the stencil away. You have created a work of art.

    • 12

Take the colors that you want to add to your etched pieces, and carefully paint the areas that are shaded in, this will add life to your crafted vase.

Tips & Warnings

  • Work with long sleeves, goggles and gloves to protect yourself. Make sure you are working in a well ventilated area. Clean up after you have completed your project.

What type of paints should be used to color the etching? I assume it should be something permanent and that won't wear off during washing.
