How to Turn a Screen Porch into a Stylish Retreat

Is your screened porch a place where everyone dumps their shoes and other outside apparel? Why not change it into another living area? You can easily make your screened porch a stylish retreat and have a great place to relax with family and friends—or just for yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clear Away the Clutter. Remove anything that should not be there, such as shoes, coats, gardening equipment, gloves, etc. Sweep the floor and hose it down. If there is some type of flooring other than cement already on your porch, mop the floor.

    • 2

Lay tile. If you have a cement patio slab for the flooring in your screen room, consider laying some tile. Find tile that will withstand temperature changes if your area gets cold during the winter. Ceramic tile is nice, but tends to break if anything is dropped on it, especially when it is cold.

Add wall décor. If you have empty wall space, decorate the wall with stylish wall hangings. You want the porch to feel like an extension of your living room or dining room, so find décor that reflects your personality. You can even add a wall fountain and enjoy the serene sound of water traveling through the fountain.

Add furniture. Make sure the furniture is outdoor furniture, so that the rain and dampness does not ruin it. Find comfortable furniture with deep cushions. Make sure you leave room for a table and chairs. When you barbecue in the back yard, you will have a comfortable haven from mosquitoes, flies and other bugs while you are eating.

Add spice to the screen room by decorating with linens and tableware. Pick linens that show your personality. If you prefer a rustic look, find placemats to go along with the rustic look, instead of linens. Put a vase of flowers, or even a potted plant in the middle of the table.

Hang plants from the rafters or the screen supports, if they are made out of wood. There are many plants that would do well in the shaded confines of a screen porch. Don’t forget to water your plants if you do add live plants to your retreat.
