The right billiard/pool lighting fixture can instantly give your game area a professional appearance. It is important to select a fixture that reflects not only your personal tastes, but also the size of your pool table. A 7-foot table calls for a 2-lamp fixture, an 8-foot table needs a 3-lamp fixture, and any table over 8 feet in length would require a unit with at least 4 lamps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ladder
  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver
  • Small hand drill (optional, depending on the lighting unit chosen)

    Hang Pool Table Lighting

  1. Step 1

Once you have selected a light fixture, check to make sure that all hardware necessary (a hanging chain and metal bar/ceiling mounts) for correct lighting installation is included in the box. Nearly all pool light fixtures contain everything needed, but make certain, just in case.

  2. Step 2

When you are ready to install, take your tape measure and determine how best to position the light based on its size. Keep in mind that this light is meant for the table only, and not intended to provide light for the entire room. The bottom of the light should hang approximately 34 to 36 inches or so above the surface of the center of the pool table, lengthwise. Another way of saying this is that the bottom of the light should be about 62 to 70 inches above the floor.

  3. Step 3

Assemble the fixture if needed and attach the chain. Be careful not to damage the lampshades—they are often easily broken or torn.

  4. Step 4

With the packaged instructions as a guide, attach the ceiling mounts to the ceiling above the center of the table using your tape measure to assist you.

  5. Step 5

Climb onto the ladder. With your screwdriver, attach the lighting fixture to the ceiling mounts with the chain included in the unit. Adjust the links in the chain until the light hangs no higher than 36 inches above the center of the table.

  6. Step 6

When you’re finished, climb down from the ladder and look at the result of your work. As long as the light is centered well and the height is appropriate, your lighting choice will make your playing pool a fun and enjoyable experience.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some pool/billiard lights are rather heavy. To avoid damaging your newly purchased light fixture, ask for help if you need it!
  • If fixtures are hung too high, the light will produce a painful glare in the eyes of players. If too low, your light will be hit frequently with the pool cues during games.
  • Never use standard household light bulbs in pool light fixtures. They tend to produce too much heat, are too bright, and can melt your fixture’s lampshades. A safe bulb that is recommended for any pool light fixture is a G-40 frosted bulb (100 watt maximum). This information should be included with the instructions included in your light’s package.
