Step1
Check the video Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) rating of the game. The rating symbol will be displayed somewhere on the packaging or will be mentioned in advertising for the game. There are six ratings: EC (early childhood, 3 and older), E (everyone 6 and older), E10+ (everyone 10 and older), T (teen, 13 and older), M (mature, 17 and older), AO (adults only, 18 and older). Listed near the rating will be additional information as to why the game received the rating like crude humor, violence or comic mischief.

Step3
Check the back cover of the video game. There will be screen shots and a synopsis of the game that will indicate what kind of game it is.
Step4
Ask a video game clerk for his/her advice on a game. It's their job to know about the games and to be able to answer your questions and concerns. Most will give an honest opinion about the games.
Step5
View game trailers online. Game trailers have become standard fare much like the movie trailer. There are websites that are solely dedicated to video game trailers. Seek these out to catch a glimpse into real-time game play of the game you are thinking about buying.
