Prescription drugs can be expensive, and not all insurance policies cover all prescription drugs or cover much of the cost of them. Many Americans do not have health insurance.Mail order prescription drugs from Canada is an affordable alternative Americans can look into and use. How to do so has become a very simple and straightforward process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • one or more valid prescriptions
  • time to comparison shop
  • internet access
  • a valid credit card
  • a stamp
  • an envelope
  • paper
  • pencil or pen
  1. Step 1

Make a list of all the prescription drugs you take.

  2. Step 2

Search the internet for reputable Canadian pharmacies that offer mail order services to the United States.

  3. Step 3

Search each pharmacy's site to ensure they sell the drugs you need. Record the cost of each drug. Be sure to note their shipping charge.

  4. Step 4

Compare your results. Starting with the least expensive pharmacy, review the pharmacy's policies and procedures for new orders. Choose the pharmacy you wish to work with.

  5. Step 5

Place your order and make your payment by credit card. Be sure to follow all of the pharmacy's guidelines carefully. They will need a copy of your physician's written prescription for each drug you order. Some pharmacies will allow you to fax in your prescriptions, others will want it sent by mail.

Tips & Warnings
  • Though many prescription drugs available in the United States are also available in Canada, the dosage increments they are sold in may vary. Consider this when using price comparisons. It may work to your advantage to buy in a higher dosage and cut the pill in half.
  • How Canadian pharmacies handle shipping costs varies. Be sure to find out each pharmacy's charges, and include this information in your price comparisons.
  • You may be able to purchase up to three month's worth of prescription medication at a time from Canada. Be sure your physician fills out your prescription in a manner that allows for that.
  • Be sure to allow sufficient time for ordering, processing and shipping when you order your prescription medication from Canada. It is usually a bad idea to miss doses of prescription medication.
  • American health insurers will not cover medication purchased from Canadian pharmacies. It is best to save this alternative for those drugs that you have to pay full price for, or that end up costing less to buy at full price from Canada than they cost with health insurance coverage in the United States.
