Hermit crabs are easy creatures to care for and even easier to buy for. They require very few supplies, but the supplies they do need must be in place for the hermit crabs to survive. Once these supplies are purchased they will rarely have to be replaced.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Get Your Supplies

  1. Step 1

Get a water sponge for the hermit crab. A water sponge should be a natural sponge that is small enough to be grasped and carried around by a hermit crab. These sponges are available in most pet supply stores and in on-line stores that cater to hermit crabs or pets in general. The sponges are used to hold onto water. Crabs will bring the sponge up to its mouths with its claws.

  2. Step 2

Buy a selection of hermit crab foods. There are also powdered hermit crab vitamins that can be sprinkled over the food if necessary. But, if the crab gets hermit crab food, vegetables and fruit on a regular basis, the vitamins will probably not be necessary.

  3. Step 3

Choose one or two items that will fit in the cage and allow the crab to hide. Pet stores usually carry small wooden hiding places that are perfect for this and will fit easily into most cages. For a large cage, place two or more of them into the cage.

  4. Step 4

Purchase a cage for the crabs. The cage doesn't need to have a top unless a cat or dog would have access to the cage. If the sides of the cage are smooth, the crab will not be able to climb out. The cage doesn't have to be very large, but it should have enough room for the crab to hide when desired and to come out of hiding and walk around when he needs to. A 10-gallon fish tank, without the water, will generally house several land hermit crabs.
