How to Make Seaweed Fertilizer

Fertilizer can help the growth of crops immensely, but not all fertilizers are created equal. Whereas some manufactured fertilizers can be little more than a soup of questionable chemicals, natural fertilizers can be made out of little more than what is found in nature. And for growing crops next near an ocean, one ingredient is available more than anything else: simple seaweed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. making Seaweed Fertilizer

    • 1

Collect your seaweed. In the northeastern United States, this seaweed is likely Knotted Wrack (with small air bladders), whereas invasive Wireweed is more common in the Pacific Ocean.

    • 2

Wash your seaweed with fresh water (or alternatively, let it sit in the rain for a few days). This helps to get rid of the seaweed's salt deposits.

    • 3

Fill a large, topless barrel with equal amounts of seaweed, and water.

    • 4

Let sit for eight weeks, stirring thoroughly every two or three days.

    • 5

Tap the barrel after eight weeks and apply to your crops.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to store this foul-smelling mixture at a safe distance.
