Hearing aids improve the quality of life for those with limited hearing ability. These tools come in many shapes and sizes and require daily cleaning to keep them in working order. With some practice, taking care of a hearing aid is very simple. Here are the steps to cleaning earwax from behind the ear hearing aid.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the type of hearing device that is being used. ITE devices are more complex than BTE devices. ITE devices may require a higher level of care including special spray to remove earwax.

  2. Step 2

Keeps ears clean. The best way to avoid earwax build up on the hearing aid is to clean ears daily.

  3. Step 3

Wash hands and dry them before cleaning the hearing aid. The ear mold is the piece that goes behind the ear of a hearing aid. This is an electrical appliance, so it is necessary for hand to be dry to avoid shorting the device.

  4. Step 4

Use a soft cotton swab as a cleaning tool on the device. Some devices come with cleaning tools, but cotton swabs work well if they don’t. Gently wipe the ear mold and remove any earwax from this part of the device. This may be done daily if build up occurs often.

  5. Step 5

Avoid using alcohol swabs or alcohol-based products. They may breakdown the material used to create the hearing aid. Occasional soap and water is fine as long as the ear mold is dried thoroughly after cleaning. Make sure that extreme heat is not used during the cleaning process as well.
