Most of us have been there. You have a computer software program you are working on, and it freezes up. Yet it still remains on your screen or blocking part of your screen. How do you fix this problem without having to restart your computer and risk losing some of your work, not to mention time? Here are some pointers on how to close a PC program that has frozen.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Software program
Step1
Depress the Control, Alt and Delete keys all at the same time. This will bring up the Windows Task Manager dialog box on your screen.
Step2
Windows Task Manager Click on the Applications tab inside Windows Task Manager. This displays the list of software programs you are currently running.
Step3
Observe which Windows software programs in the list are running and which have stopped. The ones that have stopped will state "not responding" after them on the right side.
Step4
End Task button for software not responding (circled) Click the End Task button for the highlighted program that is not responding. You may receive a confirmation. Proceed to the next step if you want an alternative.
Step5
Right-click the program on the taskbar and click Close. The software should then disappear from the taskbar on the bottom.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is not necessary to send Microsoft Windows an error report for each crashed program.
  • If the same software always crashes, you may need a computer repair or have a software conflict.
